Middlesex Basketball League Premier Division - Westside 1 vs Phoenicians 1 27/01/2002 Westside 1 continued their winning ways with a win over Phoenicians 101 - 66 in the Premier Division. Westside came out with a lot of energy racing into a 20 point lead at the end of the first quarter. They continued to apply the pressure for the next three quarters with their bigger opponents unable to deal with the speed and athleticism of the home team. This win moves the team up into fifth position in the league and bears well for the visit next week of the league leading Brunel University. Leading scorers in the game were Matt Maguire, 28 points, and Anthony Lazare, 18 points. Westside Scorers: Maguire 28, Lazare 18, Tennyson 16, Mayers 11, Morris 10, Bridle 6, Peters 6, Rose 6, Middlesex Basketball League Premier Division - Westside 1 vs Brunel University 03/02/2002 On Sunday, Westside 1 entertained the league leading Brunel University at the Janet Adegoke Leisure Centre. The game started fairly even with several lead changes and the score at halftime was 38 - 33. Westside made a big run in the third quarter establishing a lead of 15 points but a run by Brunel at the end of the third closed the gap to 4 points. In a topsy-turrvy fourth quarter, Westside's trademark defense began to disintegrate as Brunel came back into the game. With the scores locked on 71, the games was there for the taking but the failure of Westside to execute offensively effectively ended the game with the final score being 77 - 86. Coach Frank Lamptey commented "We are a defensive team and we stopped playing defense in the fourth quarter. It's frustrating because these are the sort of things we talk about before the game". The leading scorers were Matt Maguire with 37 points and Andrew Mayers with 17. Westside Scorers: Maguire 37, Mayers 17, Tennyson 8, Lazare 7, Rose 4, Bridle 2, Peters 2, Morris 2 Middlesex Cup Semi Final- Westside 1 vs Brunel University 16/03/2002 On Saturday, Westside 1 travelled to Hillingdon to face Brunel University in the semifinal of the Middlesex Cup. Stung into action by two previous defeats against their opponents, Westside were totally focused on the job at hand and raced into a 10 point lead. Using stifling defense and an uptempo offense, Westside dominated throughout the game with their lead growing to 40 points at one stage. Brunel staged a mini-comeback but the boys from W6 held steady and the final score was 93 - 61.Coach Frank Lamptey commented "This was an excellent performance by the team and everybody contributed to this win. This win sets us up for a rematch with Slough Raiders and the players are already talking about getting revenge for that overtime loss in January". The leading scorers for Westside were Matt Maguire with 29 points, Anthony Lazare with 19 points and Andrew Mayers also with 19 points. The final is to be held on the 6th April at the American Community School in Hillingdon. |
