Sep 05: National Cup defeat for Westside Westside travelled to the South Coast for a National Cup second round matchup with the first divison Worthing Thunder. Despite playing two divisions below their opposition, Westside started brightly but then a string of bad passing was punished by the home team who converted them into easy scoring opportunities. The officials also weren't being kind to the visitors and when leading rebounder Patrick Omigie was whistled for his third foul in the first quarter, Coach Lamptey had no choice but to change to a zone defence to defend the interior. This opened up the perimeter for the opposition who moved the ball well and always seemed to find the open man for an open jumpshot and they began connecting on their attempts. The first quarter score was 36 - 14. In the second quarter, Westside changed defences again and were able to find some fluency on offense reducing the defecit to 12 but the fouls once again began to pile up as the bigger opposition controlled the backboards for second and third opportunities and finished the quarter to lead 57 - 35. In the third, forced back into the zone by fouls, Worthing hot shooting continued as they made 10 three point shots in the quarter to effectively end the game as a contest. In the fourth, Westside showed some pride and began to play their uptempo game but it was a case of too little to late and the final score was 130 - 80. The leading scorer was Daniel Worku with 28 points. Coach Frank Lamptey commented "This game was an opportunity to measure the level of basketball we want to achieve and we certainly saw an incredible performance by Worthing. We should take the positives from this and build on it for our own league season.
