Oct 05: Westside win at home against Richmond Westside were back in action with a home fixture against Richmond College - London United on Saturday. Looking to build on last weeks away win, the team from Shepherds Bush struggled to find any rythmn on offense as they were getting open looks but were having difficulty scoring. However, their defence was holding firmly and despite their offensive woes were only down six points, 19 - 25 at halftime. A relatively calm Coach Lamptey stressed their need for more patience at the interval and changed the team formation to a zone press. This immediately began to pay dividends as the away team continually kept turning the ball over to Westside who capitalised by converting these steals in transition points to score 37 points in the quarter. This formation continued in the fourth and playing will a new found poise on offense and still playing stifling defence, Westside surged ahead in the fourth outscoring their opposition 33 - 4 to win the game comfortably 89 - 45. The leading scorers were Daniel Worku with 26 points and Patrick Omigie with 14 points. Coach Frank Lamptey commented "The contrast between the two halves of basketball was unbelievable. In the first half, everything seemed rushed on offense and because we were missing a lot of open jumpshots, everybody tried to play too quickly. At halftime, I just asked them to settle down, let the game come to them and to attack them defensively and it paid dividends as we outscored them 70 - 20 in the second half." This win takes them to third in the table with a 2 - 1 record. Next weekend, Westside travel to Berkshire to play Reading Rockets.
