Oct 05: Westside beat Eastside for first league win After last weeks cup defeat, Westside got back into action with an away fixture to Eastside Eagles in the league. Despite their eagerness to kickstart their season, Westside started slowly as the home team raced into a 7 point lead at the start of the first quarter. This prompted Coach Lamptey to change defences to a match up zone defence which began to confuse the opposition and provided them with numerous opportunities to score in transition to take the lead. However, despite playing excellent defence, the shooting on offense was rather wayward and the score at haltime was 25 - 21. In the third quarter, Eastside started to fight back and took the lead with 2 minutes remaining in the third as Westside began to struggle with their opposing big men on the boards. At the start of the fourth, Eastside took a 7 point lead but Westside began to clamp down defensively as they regained the lead with some timely three pointers from Anthony Lazare and Daniel Worku. With less than a minute left, Westside led by 5 but Eastside got back into it with a three point play to cut the lead to 2 with 25 seconds left. On the next possession, the officials whistled Westside for a travelling violation to give the home team a last chance to win the game. With 8 seconds remaining, looking for a two to tie the game, Westsides scrambling defence held firm and Eastside were forced to take a bad shot which fell short for the away team to claim their first league victory 54 - 52. The leading scorer was Patrick Omigie with 11 points and Daniel Worku with 10. Coach Frank Lamptey commented "This performance was much improved
defensively considering we gave up 130 points last week. Our offence,
on the other hand, left a lot to be desired and we will work on that this
week before our home game against Richmond".
