Mar 05: Westside lose unbeaten home record to London Eagles

Westside suffered their first home defeat of the season on Saturday against London Eagles and with it handed the regular season title to Solent Stars. In the first quarter, Westside started poorly and were behind by 7 points early before a fighting back to end the first quarter up 17 - 14. In the second quarter, both teams traded baskets but there was little offensive flow in the game as the score at halftime was 30 - 27. This continued in the third with the home team continuing to lead but unable to put clear distance between them and London Eagles and the score was 44 - 42 going into the final quarter. In the fourth, Westside started brightly to establish a 5 point lead but the Eagles came back with a 6 point run of their own to take the lead for the first time since the first quarter. With momentum on their side, they continued to execute and opened up a 4 point lead with 3 minutes to go. The home team rallied to get the score back within 2 but that was close as they got and in the final minute, foul shots for Eagles increased the final score to 53 - 61.

Coach Frank Lamptey commented " This was our worst performance of the season at the worst possible time in a game we needed to win to stay in contention. Our poor shooting and poor decision making today really hurt us and we are going to have to regroup and refocus if we intend to get anything out of the season. We may now have lost homecourt advantage in the playoffs and next weeks final game against Bognor is now a must win game".

On Saturday, Westside entertain Bognor Pirates at the Kensington Leisure Centre at 4pm.
