Jan 05: Westside sluggish in victory over Swindon On Saturday, Westside entertained Swindon Sonics as they looked to maintain their position at the top of EBL Division 3 East. They started off well establishing their pressure defence early in the first quarter to build a lead of 10 points but the officials quickly started to build fouls on the home team, which allowed Swindon back into the game at the foul line as the first quarter ended 18 - 11. In the second quarter, both teams traded baskets with neither team gaining any advantage and the lead remained at 7 at half time. After the interval, Westside assumed control with a run of 7 unanswered points to establish a fourteen point lead but Swindon came bak again to reduce the deficit. At the beginning of the fourth, Westside went again to a small lineup to break the game upon and went on a 10 - 2 run to open up a 20 point lead which opened up the game. Swindon had a brief rally towards the end of the game to reduce the deficit but Westside were comfortable winners. The final score was 74 - 58. The games leading scorer was Anton Fraser with 14 points. Westside Coach Frank Lamptey commented "This was an average performance from the team, especially on offense. We are going to have to improve in that area if we are going to have any success this season". The result keeps Westside top of the league with Solent Stars with a 10 - 1 record. On Saturday, the team travels to Southampton for a top of the table clash with Solent with the winners looking to gain an advantage in the race for the championship.
