Dec 05: Westside go down in Kent

Westside travelled to Canterbury for a top of the table clash with the East Kent Crusaders. Eager to regain their winning league form, Westside started brightly but East Kent came back into the game with a couple of threes and opened up a 24 - 18 lead at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was more even until the last 3 minutes when East Kent went on a 10 - 0 run to open up a 14 point half time lead for a score of 48 - 34.

At halftime, Coach Lamptey implored his team to step up their defensive intensity if they were going to get back into this game. In the first two minutes, East Kent hit 2 threepointers to push the lead up to 20 but this kickstarted the visitors into action as they began to chip away at the lead through the inside presence of Patrick Omigie and the outside shooting of Daniel Worku. At the end of the third, the score was 59 - 51. Buoyed by the change in momentum, Westside continued to attack the basket and with 3 minutes left the score was 61 - 60 to the home team. Westside continued to look to take the lead but shots were not dropping and poor foul shooting was also a problem. With less than 10 seconds remaining, Westside trailed by 2 and took a three at the buzzer to win the game but it hit the front of the rim and bounced out for a final score of 63 - 61. Leading scorer was Daniel Worku with 18 points.

Coach Frank Lamptey commented "We had opportunities in this game but never took them. Our poor foul shooting (10 - 23) was a major factor but we did very well to battle back from 20 down and held them to only 15 points in the second half."
