Season
2000/2001
Oct 12th 2000. A day to remember in the history of basketball in West London as Westside, led by Frank Lamptey, visited Lambeth Lakers for their first competitive fixture in The London Metropolitan Second Division. Despite their inexperience as a group, the score was tied after three quarters but Lambeths execution dominated in the fourth quarter and the final score was 82- 61. The team didn't have to wait too long for the first victory as they entertained EY Knights at the Janet Adegoke Leisure Centre and ran out winners 70 - 48. Victory over Logica saw the team climb to the top of the League but another narrow defeat to Auburn. After the Christmas break, the team dedicated itself to challenging for the title and behind the consistent scoring of small forward Roland Morris established themselves as contenders with a record of 11 wins and four losses. The title came down to an away fixture to the Barnet Bulldogs, who had knocked the team out of the London Metropolitan Cup, in their final game of the season in game both teams could not afford to lose. Westside raced into a quick lead in the first quarter with Darren Dick dominating inside and the rest of the team running their offence to perfection. This continued in the second quarter behind 12 points from power forward John Glasgow. Barnet rallied in the third with some great perimeter shooting and the score was tight going into the fourth quarter. At the start of the fourth, the teams exchanged the lead several times but with five minutes remaining it was shooting guard Nathan Brewer who took over connecting on a deep three pointer and connecting on key free throws in a run which broke the game open. The final score was 91 - 78 and Westside were champions in their first season. Coach Frank Lamptey commented "At the beginning of the season I didn't really know what to expect but this group of guys have grown together in the last few months and whilst we weren't the best team at the start of the season we were at the end and that's what won us this title".
