Westside and Active Sports

The lottery funded Active Sports Basketball Programme is in its second year and Westside are responsible for delivering the programme in the boroughs secomdary schools but just what is Active Sports? Below is a summary of this new junior development programme and what it means for you.

What is Active Sports?
Active Sports Basketball is for those boys and girls aged 12-14 who already enjoy the sport in school and community programmes. It also aims to meet the large unfulfilled demand that already exists by taking young people who play the game into a club and competition environment.

Who can participate in Active Sports?
The program is player-centred, fun-focused and affordable to all. Girls and boys; abled or disabled; naturally gifted or sporting battler, Aussie Hoops caters for ALL. It provides opportunities to learn, opportunities to play with your friends and opportunities to develop important social skills in a convenient, safe and friendly environment.

Who runs the Active Sports Programme?
Westside Basketball are respnsible for delivering Active Sports in Hammersmith & Fulham and provide qualified coaches to run basketball activity sessions at various locations. The programme will offer opportunities for children to develop their basketball potential.

What are the aims of the Active Sports Programme?
First and foremost Active Sports Basketball is designed to be safe for children and to be enjoyable for players, teachers, parents and coaches. Sessions emphasise involvement and are designed to gradually build confidence, create a positive outlook on physical activity, develop healthy lifestyles and establish a relationship between elite and grass-roots basketball.

How is Active Sports structured?

There are four different stages of the Active Sports programme. Stage One is Local Schemes which are school-based activities designed to involve young people who have already been introduced to the basics. Stage Two is Club Development and involves developing quality junior clubs. Stage Three is Assessment which focuses on assessing the abilities of all participants. Stage Four is the participation stage and the more talented young people will be selected to participate in the District and Regional development squads.
